The right to food is an essential right according to the Constitution of South Africa. It links to so many crucial issues like wages, housing, ability to exercise rights and access to basic services by the marginalised and the poor, education, policy making and engagements with state and other affected stakeholders to create an environment that is conducive to enable people to have access to adequate food whether they are buying it or growing it.
High food prices, high rates of unemployment as well as environmental concerns all these issues are of vital importance and need to be debated as widely and as inclusively as is possible. There is a need for alternatives to the current systems and representatives showcased alternative ways of realising the right to access “sufficient food” by people from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga. These issues need to be heard to inform and encourage discussion on the right to food and about strides taking place in this area…
